[email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] Honorable Legislative Members, I just learned of Sarasota County Commissioners’ legislative agenda will include supporting a repeal of the Florida “Stand Your Ground” law. This is an enormous mistake. How many times has a police officer used his firearm to directly protect the life of a citizen? I can’t recall a single incident. How many times has a police officer used his firearm to protect himself? Many times come to mind, right. In fact, people who did not have a firearm have been shot by police because the police “thought” the person had a firearm. In just about every case the shooting officer involved was found to have followed department procedures and policies and not charged with a criminal offense. As a matter of fact, just a couple days ago in New York City two women were wounded by police officers who fired their guns into a crowd because a man “pointed his finger” at them. But I’m sure the investigation will result they followed procedure. This begs the question; is the life of a police officer more important than the life of a private citizen? Every human being has the inalienable right to defend their gift of life. Yet, legislators are so eager to infringe upon that right. Throughout the ages there have always been bad people who have no respect for laws; nor do they care. They will commit the act of violence regardless of the number of ant-gun or gun control laws you enact. The greatest deterrent to violent crime on the private citizen is the armed citizen. It has been proven over and over again that a person with criminal intent will target a defenseless victim. An armed citizen, not encumbered by the potential of prosecution, is the criminal’s greatest fear and greatest deterrent. If this law is repealed you will empower the criminal with the knowledge that his law abiding victim will retreat and that will be to the criminal’s advantage. Violent crimes and crime in general will increase. I don’t think you want to be responsible for that bad decision. Don’t be swayed by the over zealous anti-gun political agendas. I strongly urge you to leave the current Stand Your Ground law intact and in place. Thank you for your continued service.
