end bear bile farming in China More than 10,000 bears are kept in tiny cages on bile farms in China. The bile, which is used in traditional medicine, is extracted using various painful, invasive techniques, all of which cause massive infection in the bears. The farmed bears are starved, dehydrated and suffer from multiple diseases and malignant tumours that ultimately kill them. They can live like this for up to 30 years. This cruel practice continues despite the availability of many effective and affordable herbal and synthetic alternatives. We are, however, concerned about the slow pace of the rescue and the lack of progress in ending this barbaric industry.
