{events of my time} IMPUNITY AND THE SENATE EMPTY THREATS One common language of IMPUNITY at all levels of Government understandable to the majority of people is that, ‘anybody can be a VICTIM.’ The history of impunity with government is as old as the government itself. Nigeria has witnessed all forms of impunity right from the Colonial Era , particularly with the government in central up to the time of the first Military Coup in 1966 when impunity become institutionalized by the Military Juntas. Even if we were not born then but at least we have been privileged and by our right to western education, read through books of history that had equipped us information-wise. Interestingly last week Tuesday, ‘The Nation’ newspaper published a comprehensive list of high profile cases that were either probed by or still under probe of this 7th National Assembly which most of the various reports submitted by the numerous ad hoc Committees couldn’t see the light of the day or were simply found unimplemented. This list ranges from; the oil subsidy probe, the River State House of Assembly crises, the probe of alleged illegal 37 housing estates in FCT, the probe of fuel subsidy regime aka SURE-P, the Apo Killings probe, the probe of all asset seized by EFCC, the probe of the N273 billion pension fund, the probe of the Minister of FCT over alleged land swap deals, the probe of the dualisation of East – West Road, down to the most recent, N255 million armoured cars purchase probe etc, over 30 cases were listed. A complete detail of these cases is available in the newspaper mentioned above. Still on that shocking reports on how the Senate and the House of Representatives flaw themselves in the full glare of the public, vital references were cited such as; ‘The Senate decided, among others, that the Pension Reform Task Force be dismantled while its Chairman, Abdulrasheed Maina, should be sent packing. Maina who refuse to honour the invitation by the committee, went to court to clear his name. The matter is still pending with other twist and turns introduced in the scam.’ ‘The House of Representatives on July 25 began a probe of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senator Bala Muhammed over alleged land swap deals. The Lawmakers were charged with investigating all cases of land allocation by the FCT from 2010 to date in order to ascertain the propriety and or abuses that borders on racketeering. The Speaker Aminu Tambuwal constituted an eight-man ad hoc committee chaired by Hon. Bimbo Daramora (APC Ekiti) to investigate the matter. The investigation was yet to commence at the time of filing that report.’ One may wonder why this writer is so keen about the inconclusive cases handled by this crippled Arm of government (Legislature). Truly is just all about the weight of those over 30 listed cases that are quite unimaginable and capable of creating psychological imbalance. To us at ‘events’ the most worrisome of all the cases listed in that comprehensive report are: (1) the Rivers State House of Assembly Crises probe, of which the Commissioner of Police (CP) Joseph Mbu and the present supervising Minister of Education Nyesome Wike were alleged to be the prime suspects but yet the duo continue making that once peaceful State ungovernable while enjoying the FG’s Impunity. Where is the Legislative Arm of Government? (2) the Apo Killings probe, where the Chief of Army Staff right in front of the Lawmakers declared the DEAD & the Injured Victims as all Members of the dreaded Boko Haram even before their trial in any court of competent jurisdictions. What is happening to this 7th National Assembly? (3) the probe on land swap deals involving the Minister of FCT, Bala Muhammed. As the Minister now demolishes people’s property with selective/biased mind while enjoying FG’s impunity, upon the fact that his administration has been described as that full of the BAD & UGLY. (4) that very popular probe on Pension Hundreds of Billions Scandal. The spirits of the DEAD are still hunting this country, then will anyone wonder why is getting more difficult fix Nigeria’s common problem (corruption) aided by Government Impunity. (5) last but not the least as these referenced ones just represent 1/3 of the whole list, is the probe of all Assets seized by the EFCC. This particular Government’s Anti-corruption Watch-dog takes the final shot for today, as the Chairman, Mallam Ibrahim Lamorde is always on the attacking side. I am personally disturbed now that everybody is on the defensive side including the National Assembly. Then who will dare probe EFCC genuinely because all the confiscated, seized and retrieved private and public properties, running into tens of TRILLIONS since its establishment have not been accounted for (at least for public consumption), yet Nigerians are still dying in hundreds everyday just to get at least one daily meal. On the final note we humbly wish to advise those enjoying Government IMPUNITY at any level today and those who fear the wraths of Impunity e.g. IGP, COAS, DIR. SSS, some Governors, few of the FG’s Kitchen Cabinet Members, some of the Lawmakers etc to have a rethink having it mind that the Almighty God is never unfair or unjust in His supreme decisions and judgment. No one can foretell where the wind will blow. Anybody can be the next VICTIM of Impunity including Mr. President himself. THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!
