ew Delhi, March 11 (KMS): India isplanning tighter control on Internetand mobile communication in occupiedKashmir as part of measures tosuppress the ongoing freedommovement in the territory.India’s security establishment hassought banning of internet-basedservices on mobile phones and hasopposed implementation of India’snational mobile number portability inthe territory.The Indian English daily, the EconomicTimes quoting documents revealedthat the Defence Ministry on thepretext of exploitation of theproliferation of internet-basedcommunication by the Mujahideen hadrecommended strict restrictions oninternet mobile communication.“It is recommended that a case betaken up with the ministry of homeaffairs and National Technical ResearchOrganisation (NTRO) for theinterception and selective banning ofGPRS services …,” the ministry said inan internal communication to thetelecom department (DoT), the paperreported.It called upon the telecom departmentto deny certain services in the areaslike Jammu and Kashmir.The ministry has also asked thedepartment to share details of audits ofSIMs sold by mobile phone companieswith the Indian Army and other forcesin the occupied territory. It has furthersought that New Delhi should notimplement national mobile numberportability (MNP) in the territory.National MNP, or full MNP, allows asubscriber to move from one circle toanother circle and change the serviceprovider without changing the mobilenumber.It has further asked DoT to take thismatter with the Ministry of ExternalAffairs (MEA) and resolve it according.
