exjobbspresentation 11 juni 13.15 Cutting food with a really sharp knife is enjoyable, yet many do not bother sharpening their knives. Furthermore people that do care are not always satisfied with the sharpening results or the sharpening procedure. Today there are many knife sharpeners for domestic use on the market, both manually and electrically driven with different advantages and disadvantages. One of them, SharpX-treme, is the reference product of this Master Thesis Project and belongs to the assortment of OBH Nordica, the initiator of the project. The purpose of the project is to investigate new constructions and design that can be used for a new innovative knife sharpener that can be sold by OBH Nordica for a lower price than the reference product and attract target consumers. Requirements and preferences for a new product were apparent through research and analysis of existing knife sharpening products and techniques on the market and through user studies. By investigating new sharpening technologies, a new construction and design was made with satisfying results and enjoyable handling. The new knife sharpener concept, Alternatum, is based on a vibration technology with the multifunction of both grinding and honing and is applicable to both Japanese and European knives. It is a gentle yet efficient sharpener that is easily used as it is flexible, comfortable, communicates correct handling and is easily stored. As Alternatum is a reliable sharpener with high usability and attractive aesthetics that gives sharp results, more people can have an enjoyable food preparation experience.
