...findings, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS ), based on more than 3 thousand oceanic samples collected around the world by a scientific expedition in 2010. The ocean currents carry plastic objects, which break in smaller fragments, due to solar radiation, said the Director of researches, Andrés Cozar, the University of Cadiz in Spain. These small pieces of plastic, known as microplásticos were, can last hundreds of years and were detected in 88% of the ocean surface analyzed during the expedition Malaspina 2010,. The scientists assessed the total amount of plastic in the oceans of the world – between 10 thousand and 40 thousand tons – currently is smaller than previous estimates. However, raised new concerns about the fate of plastic, particularly the smaller pieces.
