for a few weeks Ive been tuning in to FOX News when I have a chance, to see their take on the happenings in these times. There the war drums are being thumped hard, harder since the executions, recorded on video of two American journalists by members of the so called Islamic State. The invited pundits who offer analysis and opinion over their air, are especially hot now, wanting that death and destruction will rain down on the areas of Iraq and Syria where IS now holds control. A month ago there was civil disruption in Ferguson MO, that precipitated in the aftermath of the killing of a young black man by a police officer. During those events, FOX News, tried to find angles on the story that were different from those being more widely reported in what they call the Mainstream Media. At every opportunity they would seek to question the characters of witnesses or of the deceased. They would try to find defensible arguments and character defenders of the police officer implicated in the event. I am so grateful that there is an alternative source of information, one not satisfied with the neatly packaged, politically correct, kinds of reports that we have become so accustomed to elsewhere. What would we do without this essential gear in the machine of the Fourth Estate, where journalists arent constrained with professional integrity, where their agenda determines how a story is reported? I am underexposed, I know but, I give thanks for Cable News, the lighthouse of hyperbole, and especially for FOX for how transparently they help us to understand the power of mass media and how it works to shape our thinking. Students in grade school, across this country will soon move to the standard of the Common Core Curriculum. Emphasis will be placed through that, on encouraging the student along a path of critical thought as opposed to accepting learned material as givens. There is much opposition being voiced about that coming change and much of it comes from conservative corners like the Church (that might be better put as church people) and FOX. I wonder why?
