Bob and I alternated translating as they asked questions, The one chinese doctor spoke French but was weak on English. So we would translate for him. As I was working for a UN project, I went and got the German director of the project and he got me all the cash needed to buy your prescriptions. He also organized blood from fellow expats. Bob contacted the school and the two priests were so helpful. The older serious one Augustine? was the go between Lome and the Peace Corps and embassy, The stockier one Cataln? organized the nuns to find a blood donor, As the evening wore on the news was relayed to us that they were going to medivac you. As the morning approached, it became apparent that the US plane was too big for the airstrip in Kara. Somehow they asked the President of Togo to let you ride on his plane in the morning to Lome and await the plane to Europe there.The hospital didnt have an ambulance to get you to the airstrip. So I went over to the military camp just before dawn, woke up the commandant who I knew from the bar at the campement and pleaded with him to use the army ambulance. Which they gladly did. The departure from Kara was surreal, two other African presidents were leaving having spent a few days with Eyadema, There were big dance troops and a band seeing them off. The priests of Chaminade kept in touch with Lome and told me of the delay in leaving Lome and of Debs passing. Karl Beck asked me to pack up any personal effects to send back to the US. Early in the new year, the ambassador and someone from Washington( GAO perhaps?) showed up in Kara and asked me questions. It was all pretty straightforward. From a medical perspective, I really cant say too much. You both left Kara intact but in bad shape. While you were both in and out of it, during your lucid times, you were so worried about each other.
