The class is comparing and contrasting the film with the previously viewed Stand By Me, as a coming of age story. Some of the topics of discussion and analysis include audience appeal, protagonist/antagonist selection, how the settings affect the plots, the use of music to reinforce theme, the time periods in which the films were produced and others. Up next is Braveheart, and the Seniors and Mr. Diaz look forward to Mr. OBriens guest lecture on the film, his favorite. Juniors In American History, the juniors and Mr. Russo have recently studied the Spanish-American War and how it turned the U.S. into both a colonial and world power. The juniors also looked at the assassination of Pres. McKinley and the growth of the Secret Service. They concluded the unit by analyzing the Progressive Movement and the major political and social reforms of the time, some of which were initiated by President T. Roosevelt. Lower House – Fr. Kuroly Sophomores The sophomores with Mr. OBrien in Global Studies have recently completed the study of World War One. The students learned what the major causes of the war were, the characteristics that made this war unprecedented in human history, as well as the short and long-term results of the war. The sophomores have now begun their study of nationalism and revolution throughout the world during the first half of the twentieth century. Freshmen The freshmen and Mr. OBrien in Global Studies have just concluded their study of the High Middle Ages. During this time, students learned about such monumental events as the signing of the Magna Carta, the Crusades, and the Hundred Years War. The freshmen have examined the rise of the nation states of Western Europe and how these powers worked with and clashed with the Church. Beginning next week, the focus shifts eastward as the class will study the Byzantine Empire and Russia. In English with Mrs. Gluszak, the freshmen have begun a study of William Goldings Lord of the Flies. Their focus will be on how society is constructed in the absence of all authority. In addition to reading the novel, they will be researching how governments balance the rights of individuals with the rights of society as a whole. Then, by re-imagining the events of the story, students will develop their own set of laws and societal norms for the boys of the island to follow. Interscholastic Notes – Mr. O’Brien - Baseball tryouts/practice began this week and will continue next week. The teams look forward to some warm weather and the ability to get out to the field. - Congratulations to the Athletes of the Month for February, sophomore Brian Hickey for his performance on the JV basketball team and senior William Tarrant, who qualified for the NYS championships in Forensics. - Congratulations to senior Timothy McQuail and junior Brian Hickey upon being named to the B Division All League Team for varsity basketball.
