In 1944, he left comic strips for a while to serve with the Marines in the Pacific. Upon demobilization, he had changed his leanings towards a more pacifist and cerebral style of story telling. This manifested itself in his next creation, a quiet and urbane ex-marine who wore glasses, smoked a pipe and had a steady girlfriend. This comic outlasted him - in fact, its one of the longest running comic strips in history with over 5 decades in syndication, ending in 1999. We know his work extremely well.
