from Rob Swift :Mastering the art of scratching is akin to learning the language arts. An affective speaker must first grasp how to spell, read and write. Then, ultimately apply creative thinking which turn sentences into paragraphs that communicate an overall feeling or idea. To achieve this as a scratcher, there are 5 basic Golden Rules that must be applied. 1. Place your hand in the 9 oclock area of the record in order to maximize control over the particular sound you choose to manipulate. 2. Experiment with a variety of scratch and fader hand postures. Then stick to those that works best for you. 3. Develop the coordination between the mark you see on the record label and the sound youre hearing yourself scratching. Visually tracking your mark makes it possible for you to recognize whether youre at the front, middle or end of a sound. In other words, eye what youre hearing and hear what youre eyeing. I cant stress how important this is!!! 4. Dominate the fader. Moving the fader alone isnt enough. You gotta dominate it. Snapping the nob completely off and on during the execution of a scratch like the transformer for example, makes all difference between your transform sounding like a transformer and not a drag. 5. Personalize your scratches. At the end of the day, ALL scratching techniques are derived from GrandWizzard Theodores Baby Scratch. ALL of them. THE FOUNDATION OF EVERY SINGLE SCRATCH (Scribble, Stab, Chop, Transform, Flare) IS MOVING YOUR RECORD HAND BACK AND FORTH. But what made it possible for scratches to evolve to where theyre at now is the ability of pioneers like Grand Master Flash, Grand Mixer DXT, Mix Master Ice, Spinbad, Cash Money, Q - Bert, and D Styles to think creative and personalize Theodores original Baby Scratch. The video below is a cool look into the journey a novice like Malindi takes in applying these 5 Golden Rules to developing a command of the scratch language.
