fun fact: Disneys Robin Hood isnt actually inspired by Robin Hood, - TopicsExpress

fun fact: Disneys Robin Hood isnt actually inspired by Robin Hood, but instead was originally inspired by an old series of stories called the Roman de Renart. Since the 1930s, Walt Disney had been interested in telling a version of the 12th century Alsatian story of Reynard (or Renart) the Fox. many of the stories about the anthropomorphic fox were satires directed at aristocratic society, with many other anthropomorphic animals satirizing as the other characters. however, they were quite violent and deemed inappropriate for children, so the idea was shelved (for those wondering: the bear gets attacked by bees, Tybalt / Tibert the cat loses an eye, and Reynard himself decapitates a rabbit and substitutes its head for a secret treasure). but that was changed in 1968 when Ken Anderson suggested doing a Robin hood story. But Robin Hood is a problematic story for children, since like Reynard, he is anti-authoritarian. but by combining it together with the original Roman De Renart idea (merging the two figures and making an animated fox the hero fighting against a cowardly lion who is not the legitimate ruler) Anderson managed to tame the violence and reduced the anti-authoritarianism message of both stories.
