fyi -- catholic schools have been teaching evolution since at least the 1930s in the US, at least. they teach that evolution, like everything, happened under gods plan. the popes statements on evolution are NOT some huge departure from past teaching. (i went to catholic school forever -- and LOVED it. in fact i emailed yesterday with my grade school principal, sr. kathleen.) even though pope benedict emphasized the god part, he didnt deny evolution. we are so eager to give pope francis props for being a radical. he is not. its much easier to imagine him the radical and that change is comin than to examine our own complicity -- catholics and non-catholics alike -- in the churchs hateful ways toward women and gays. (and if you dont think telling women they dont own their own bodies is hateful, youre wrong. and if you dont think telling gays that they are disordered is hateful, youre wrong. hate dressed up in religion is still hate.)
