So far in December, winter has eased off the gas pedal, in contrast to a persistently cold, snowy November in the Midwest and Northeast. (MORE: December Thaw | Novembers Cold, Snowy Records) Despite that, atmospheric ingredients may combine to spawn a coastal storm bringing a potpourri of wind-driven heavy rain and wet snow to parts of the Northeast in the week ahead. Low pressure is expected to form along the western end of a stalled frontal boundary near or offshore the Mid-Atlantic coast later Monday into Tuesday and head north into New England. At the same time, a cold front will sweep eastward through the Great Lakes into the interior Northeast. The interaction and intensity of each of these features remains somewhat in question this far out, holding the key to all the important foreast details. Another challenge with this system, as with most Northeast coastal storms, is how much cold air will be available. Despite the passage of a cold front through the Northeast this weekend, the path of this coastal low appears likely to dislodge the cold air (translation: air below freezing near the surface) from a significant swath of the Northeast, at least for a time. Map updates every 5 minutes (refresh your browser for the latest).. With marginal cold air in place ahead of the developing low near the East Coast, and a potential track almost due north into New England, we expect the most dominant precipitation type along the immediate I-95 urban corridor Tuesday, perhaps into Wednesday to be rain. This rain could be heavy in coastal and southern New England as well as parts of the Mid-Atlantic states, from New Jersey to Maine. Rainfall totals over 3 inches may lead to flash flooding Tuesday into early Wednesday, particularly in flood-prone urban areas. (FORECAST: Boston | NYC | Philly) Eventually, rain would changeover to snow, as the cold air aloft chills the column of air over the I-95 corridor later Tuesday into Wednesday. If the upper-level low pressure system providing the pocket of cold air aloft moves slowly, lingering snow showers are possible into Thursday, as well. Snowfall totals from Boston to New York, Philly and Washington, D.C. are expected to be minimal, if they occur at all. The heaviest snowfall potential will line up over the interior Northeast from northern Pennsylvania to New Yorks Mohawk and Upper Hudson Valleys, Catskills, Adirondacks, Green and White Mountains, and northern Maine, with 6 inches or more possible in these areas. Winter storm watches have been posted for many of these areas, generally valid starting Monday night or Tuesday morning and continuing through Wednesday. However, it is possible that precipitation may mix with or change over to rain, possibly heavy, for a time even in valley locations of northern New England and perhaps Upstate New York. (FORECAST: Albany | Burlington) Depending on how strong the coastal low becomes, some sporadic power outages and downed tree limbs are possible in the heaviest snow zone. This threat also may arise on the warmer side of the storm in parts of coastal and southern New England later Tuesday and Wednesday. This does not appear to be a crippling Northeast snowstorm with feet of snow, damaging winds and major coastal flooding/beach erosion. However, snow-covered roads in the interior Northeast will make travel challenging, and flight delays are probable in at least some of the Northeast airport hubs Tuesday and Wednesday, as well. Given the number of people affected and the potential severity of the storm, this system may eventually meet The Weather Channel storm naming criteria. Significant Winter Weather For The Northeast Computer model guidance continues to show uncertainties for the winter weather system that could produce a significant snow from the eastern Great Lakes through Interior New England Tuesday into Thursday. Cold air (to keep precipitation all snow) is at a premium with this storm, more like an early November or late March scenario. Cold air is normally not much of a problem in December! East Coast cities will see rain. Interior cities in the Northeast at lower elevations (PA/NY/western New England) will see snow mixing with or changing to rain at times Tuesday to Wednesday. Rain/mix turn back to all snow by late Wednesday and continuing Wednesday night into Thursday but a big question is how much snow can fall after this occurs? This is a tricky situation with marginal cold air, some dynamics, exact track, slow movement. So, it wont be snowing continuously and heavier precipitation could come in intermittent spurts. For cities in the interior Northeast snow will fall with temps in the low to mid 30s and could mix with rain at times (especially Tuesday) so getting around shouldnt be too difficult. Looks like highest snowfall totals will be in higher elevations from NE PA through Upstate New York to western/northern New England. Heavy rain/coastal flooding and local flooding is possible closer to the East Coast. The impacts from this system will occur in the early Tuesday through Thursday time frame. Another Significant Precipitation Event Likely For The Sierra Wednesday night - Friday A strong storm will move into the West Coast by Thursday. This storm will produce strong winds from southern Oregon down through central and parts of southern California with heavy snow in the Sierra by Wednesday night and into Friday. Snow levels start out about 6500 feet in the northern Sierra and 7500 feet in the central Sierra (with powerful winds). Storm moves down to southern California by Thursdayand snow levels come down some by Thursday night and Friday. Highest elevations of the Sierra could see 2 to 4 feet (or even more) with this storm. light rain diffrent parts of those area western bc canada and usa and mexcio 30-40% chance of light rain heavy rain for victor and vancouver bc canada western and northeast washington state northern idaho state western oregon state northern virgina state washington dc phillpy pa state rhonde island delaware state nj state nyc ny state boston mass state southeast manie state nova scotia canada 60-100% heavy rain 3-12 inches of rain 4+ rain for vancouver bc canada seattle washington state winter snow warning for northern alaska state northern yukon canada 3-12 inches of snow blowing and drifting snow visiblty be at 0 very dangerous drving and snow pack and whiteout and icy roads condition bizzard warnning for northern yukon canada 3-6 inches of snow blowing and drifting snow visibilty be at 0 very dangerous drving and snow pack and whiteout and icy roads condition snowfall for higher mountain or flatland area for alaska state yukon canada bc canada mountains washington state truckee and donner pass california state northwestern montana state western alberta canada northern minnsota state fort france and thunder bay ontario canada 4 great lake area wisconsin gary indania northern ohio state michigan state parts of ontario canada eastern ky state northwestern virgina state west virgina state pa state ny state upper eastern state southern quebec canada marinetime canada 6-12 inches of snow blowing and drifting snow visibilty be at 0 very dangerous drving and snow pack and whiteout and icy roads condition frezzing rain warning for western and southeast alaska state northern bc canada northern alberta canada southeastern washington state eastern oregon state western idaho state virgina state 1-3 inches of frezzing rain very dangerous drving and icy roads condition high wind warning for alaska state yukon canada all way nu canada western canada minnsota state upper mid western state parts of western state all way down southern state florida state sc state nc state virgina west virgina state all way nebraska state owa state 4 great lake area wisconsin ohio michigan state ontario canada boston mass state watertown ny state southern manie state eastern canada 22 or 33 mph winds windchill warning for alaska state yukon canada all way nu canada northern sask and manitboa canada northern ontario canada quebec canada ny state boston mass state upper eastern state marinetime canada northern quebec canada labordor canada -20 or -2 very cold below weather for yall brrr frost warning for yukon canada all way nu canada western canada minnsota state nd state northern ontario canada ny state boston mass state upper eastern state quebec canada eastern canada labordor canada black roads icy condition and very dangerous drving on icy bridge condition froggy or ice froggy condition for bc canada all way california state az state new mexcio texas oklanhoma kansas iowa state minnsota state visibilty be at 0-2 miles very dangerous drving and thick foggy or ice foggy condition right till by morning be caution keep eyes on it yall tune weather channel weather network wx cb radio scanner weather radio cell phone or desktop laptop tablet weather yall be safe drive safe god bless yall bigger both thumbs up drivers everybody else here :) 10-4
