goodbye prince rupert fishing....and another one....wtf is wrong with our people? via Linda Jennifer Innes - I am so confused about how and why Banks Island Gold operation is allowed to operate at Banks Island. Banks Island is one of our richest territories for food; salmon, seaweed, halibut and land. Does anyone know what a Benefit Impact Agreement is? Enviormental Monitoring? Banks Island is on Gitxaala unceded territory. I am not against mining in our territory or here to slam anyone, but why is this allowed to happen without benefits to our entire nation? Did you know that when industry embarks to extract resources from your territory their will be impacts? It includes land loss, possible enviornmental damage and sustinence loss, but more so various Nations take into account royalties that could benefit the nations in terms of Economic Development, this could include a percentage of jobs for our nation, training and development for our nation, scholarships, clean up. Interesting as we are talking about GOLD in our traditional territory and the long term benefts will be only to industry. I understand jobs are there as we speak for our people but the benefits could be far reaching if the homework is done. Our land base is who we are as a people, the stories, language, we wouldnt let anyone come and take over our home or reserve so why are we allowing such development on unceded territory withouth negotioations and benefit impact agreements? Just some thoughts and any idea on how to engage the Nation and Industry to come to an agreement so everyone wins not just industry.
