great info in this post [quote] I love how many of the arguments in the comment section in AJE defending the Russians tend to spin around on a few specific topics like: EU is/going to be broke they are better off with Russia. Most post Cold War Warsaw Pact countries want to go back to the Russian influence sphere. Ukraine has been part of Russia since the Soviet Union and should be part of the new Russian influence sphere. Russia has the right to Crimea because all the ethnic russians living there. Russia has the right to Crimea because they fought the Ottomans and the French there. The Tatars dont have rights over Crimea because they sided with the Ottomans ages ago. Tell you what, these are mostly BS. The Russian economy while stable is almost completely reliant on commodities like Oil and Natural Gas, the domestic production of consumer goods and electronics isnt done in Russia. The Europe Union has a more diverse Economy, while being hit hard from the global recession their economy is still in recovery and isnt tethered in just a few products. Besides the inflow of immigrants and the best employment and development opportunities still being inside the EU instead of Russia is a pretty clear indicator of which region has better standards and stability. EU countries also dont jail, poison and expatriate journalists, opposition members and any other person or group with conflicting views and/or interest of the ruling party. Hungary, Czech Republic and Poland are now considered well developed countries with high HDIs and stable economies, which they managed to achieve after they passed through several economic and social reforms which turned them towards the West and joined the EU. They enjoy several economic and political liberties theyd never have if they didnt join the EU. Not to mention the deep resentment the people in these countries harbor against the russians. No wonder the Ukrainians seeing the success of their post Soviet Union brothers now want to be part of the EU. If the Russian deal was so good, there wouldnt be so many protests in Ukraine against having the Ukrainian government being another vassal of Moscow. The Ukrainians suffered greatly in the hands of the Russians during the Cold War and now they have a chance to get away from Moscows influence and they are taking it. You can whine and cry as much as you want saying this is another western conspiracy to turn Ukraine towards the West and away from Moscow, but no matter how much you dismiss the protesters as being western paid shills you cannot manufacture something like the Ukrainians sentiment against Russia and the discontent they have against their former president. It is true there were a few far right wing groups among the protestors, it does not make the whole protest a fascist nazi take over of Ukraine, much by the otherwise. Yanukovich was deposed after his own parliament declared him unfit for being president and he wasnt voted back into office, while Yatsenyuk was voted into office by the Ukrainian parliament within the constitutional law of Ukraine, along the support of the people who were protesting in Maidan. The only ones not recognizing the new Ukrainian government are the Kremlin and the sore loser Yanukovic. If Crimea wants to secede from Ukraine, this should be a deal between the Ukrainian Parliament and the Crimean Parliament, not between Crimean and Russia as Crimea still (was?) part of Ukraine. Saying Russia has rights over Crimea thanks to some geographic/historical reason is purely hypocritical of the Kremlin who has a nice and long history of crushing separatism but supporting separatism with sheer violence and pretty much pure hypocrisy of some AJE commenters who would be over their heads if any other western country did the same. It would be like UK claiming it is OK for them to invade and occupy South Africa and India thanks to it being a former colony and thanks to all ethnic Britons living there. Russia invading Crimea to protect the Russian Nationals there is no different than what Germany did in 1938 when they invaded Czechoslovakia with the pretext of defending the ethnic germans there, despise of in both cases none of the groups were suffering any sort of abuse whatsoever. Say whatever you want but opposing the west doesnt make Putin good by default. Opposing Putins government doesnt make anyone automatically a a wests puppet. Everyone and every group have conflicting interests, the Ukrainians believe they should distance themselves from Moscows rule, and they have the right to do so. It doesnt matter how many people cry about conspiracies, it doesnt matter if EU and US supported their choice because it was also in their interest, but this choice was made by the Ukrainian people and they have the final word on with whom they will align themselves with. And it seems they chose the west.[end quote]
