guru nanak dev ji di sakhi - Kauda the Cannibal Long time ago Guru Nanak and Bhai Mardana were passing through a jungle in Andhra Pradesh (a state in India). The people in that jungle lived by hunting wild animals or eating wild fruits and berries. They covered their bodies with animal skins. Bhai Mardana was very hungry, not having eaten for two days in that jungle. So he said to Baba ji “I am dying without food.” Guru ji consoled him saying, “I am also with you. Have some patience; we may soon reach some village. There you can eat to your hearts desire.” But being patient was out of question for Bhai Mardana at that time. He said to Guru ji “You stay here I’ll look for some fruits to eat.” “This jungle is full of deceptions; so stay with me. You may loose your way or be eaten up by some wild animal,” said Guru ji. Mardana paid no heed and went on. While searching for something to eat he fell into the hands of Kauda the cannibal; who would eat travelers and passersby. He took Bhai Mardana to his hut and tied him with a rope. Guru Nanak had heard of Kauda from others, so when Bhai Mardana did not return after sometime he started looking for him and reached Kauda’s hut. There he saw Bhai Mardana tied up and oil being heated on one side to fry him. Kauda had gone to fetch some more wood to heat oil. On seeing Guru Nanak Bhai Mardana was very pleased. His hunger for food had vanished. When Kauda returned and saw Guru Nanak standing near the hut, he ran to free Bhai Mardana leaving all the wood. After freeing Mardana he went to Guru Nanak and placed his head at his feet and said, “Please pardon me. I have committed a mistake.” Such was the effect of Guru ji’s presence on him. Guru ji said “Kauda we have traveled hundreds of miles to rid you of this habit of cannibalism.” Hearing this Kauda rose and arranged meals for Guru ji and Mardana and changed his way of life forever.
