hahahaha - and my topic was not the slightest bit frightening: There he goes again. Sometimes I forget how much of my day is spent being supervised by that darned dog. When I look for a cow and her new calf in the colorful cool of fall, or as I wipe the sweat out of my eyes while fixing fence on a long summer day, all the time he is here. Milking time means he’s off chasing those barn cats he will never catch. And all the hours on the tractor; he’s present when I plow, plant, harvest, bring in hay and spread manure. He knows each inch of the acreage in it’s tiniest detail and makes sure to show me his every concern. But just as he’s always with me, some higher calling whispers in his ear each day at this same time. Off he’ll fly. No need to look at my watch to know it’s 3 o’clock on the button. It’s the kids. He simply must fulfill his duty of meeting the kids. He’ll sit at the end of the drive while they step off the bus, run and greet them, bark his joy at their return, perform their favorite trick and share their snack. And then he’s gone again. Back to find me in the furthest field and make sure I am not late bringing the cows in for the evening milking. That darned dog.
