has the chance to work on a fine brand guitar bought by an employee and taken from the factory before it hit the paint shop. It stayed for year unfinished in the case the brought to me.... With the amount of putty and scratches left on it, it clearly was meant to have an opaque black finish. Sad to say : Everyone I know who sanded down an instrument with thick opaque finish got disappointed by the quality of the wood once uncovered, and they use up to 20 layers of paint/lacquer to make it look nice. Bottom line : You want to insure top wood quality and good sound? Go for clear finish, they have no choice to put better timber there and you have a thiner layer of plastic around your axe to dampen the sound....
