heres a British take on the Doug Sahm classic. in 1970, Mott The Hoople were a struggling, rough-and-tumble hard rock band on the verge of breaking up. they were heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones & Bob Dylan, but had a distinct sound all their own. in 1972, David Bowie entered the picture & turned them into successful glam rockers with his song All The Young Dudes. but its interesting to see & hear what a fine band they were before they hit fame & fortune. and like The Rolling Stones, they werent afraid to do a country song. its ironic but fascinating to hear a limey bloke like Ian Hunter sing the line, you just cant live in Texas if you dont have a lot of soul, with as much conviction as Doug Sahm. Mott were very influential on future heavy metal & punk bands. The Clash were big fans & Mick Jones & Ian Hunter became fast friends & would later record together after Mott called it a day. David Bowies ex lead guitarist Mick Ronson also became Ian Hunters right hand man & they recorded a number of great albums together.
