hmmm..just got this email from Observers Sophie Budvietas..duh, sounds to me like sour grapes..she should go do her own interview.. Good Afternoon Terry, Sophie Budvietas here from the Samoa Observer. I was online and came across an article you wrote concerning a 14-year-old survivor of abuse. This concerned me somewhat due to the ethical grey area you seemed to have wandered into in not only interviewing her, but then posting it online, but also because of her age and the crime committed against her. In that vein I have some questions I was hoping you could answer. 1. How was this interview set up? Did you approach SVSG or did they approach you? 2. Under Samoas Journalists Code of Ethics a child under the age of 16 should not be photographed or interviewed unless a parent or guardian is present. Was a parent or guardian present at all times during the interview? 3. Also under the COE it states care must be taken that nothing in the report implies the relationship between the accused and the child. Do you feel that in this report you took that care? 4. Is the crime that was committed against her before the court? 5. Although you have hidden her name in an effort to protect her identity - this is a small community, can you guarantee her anonymity? 6. Did you inform the young girl that her story would be multicast across Facebook? 7. As a 40 year old male, do you think you were the best choice to interview these young woman - surely there was a more appropriate journalists available at the Savali - considering this was an exclusive? 8. In regards to the actual interview itself, and regardless of her being a child - did you afford her the courtesy of being in control of the interview at all times? 9. Did you explain the process of publishing a story to the young woman? 10. Did you yourself consider that by publishing this story that it may cause further trauma to the young woman? 11. How does this story in any way contribute to what the public needs to know about this issue in our society? What value does it add? 12. Some might say that your story is more in the interest of the public rather than being in the public interest. What do you have to say to this? Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. I hope to hear from you soon. Regards, Sophie Budvietas Chief Reporter samoaobserver +685 7627626 sophiejprice@gmail
