#hockeynightinchina I wonder why China has a billion people yet we do not export and broadcast hockey night in Canada to the Chinese in Chinese. Dont think it can be done? Heres how I propose we do it. 1) A Saturday evening in Canada is a Sunday afternoon in China. This could make Hockey night in #China family time. 2) Instead of showing games on traditional personal TV sets we could air live games in movie theatres thus adding to the anticipation of a family outing where families would pay to watch in theatres. 3) Use stoppages in games: penalties, icing, off-sides, etc, to explain why the clock has stopped and a face off is happening. This will make an seemingly confusing game make sense. I suggest getting a popular Chinese entertainer to pop up on the screen and explain the stoppage and the accommodating strategy. 3) Use TV commercial breaks to have mini contests with small prizes to be given away. For example a ticket could number could be called where the contestant could come to front of the theatre to do something such as shot a tennis ball into a hockey net, answer a trivia question, drink something weird like root beer (remember this is being done in China) for a small prize like a stuffed animal or a USB drive. 4) While North Americans are watching Coaches Conner on a Saturday night Chinese families gathered in theatres in China to watch the same hockey game on a Sunday afternoon in Beijing and Shanghai could be watching a short Chinese film or TV drama during the intermission. Not only does this add variety to the family event but sets a venue for Chinese entertainment to be promoted with western entertainment. The two entertainments could be seen as harmoniously standing side by side. 5) Get official NHL stickers on WeChat along with official NHL player accounts on WeChat. If you do not know what #WeChat is you are definitely not in the know of social media. I will also be giving ideas on how to promote hockey in Japan. I think this is Canadian culture that can be exported beyond North America and Europe.
