how can I not be proud of my little brother Carl Thomas you are doing great things in DC. Carl Thomas, Director for the Office of the Clean City Initiative (OCC)for the District of Columbia, is a native Washingtonian and proud third-generation resident of Ward 5. He is a graduate of DC’s Jefferson Junior and Eastern Senior High Schools. Carl earned his undergraduate degree from North Carolina Wesleyan College where he studied Political Science and was active in Student Council. From early childhood Carl was certain his personal legend was to be ofservice to the children of his city—Washington, DC. In addition to his position in the Mayor’s cabinet, Carl is currentlyWard 5 Representative to the DC Democratic Committee; Executive Director of DC Young Democrats; Vice Chair to the Muslim Democratic Caucus; Advisor to A Tiny Village Foundation; and President and CEO of The Thomas Foundation, a private program management consulting group. In keeping with his commitment to the children of Washington, Carl works with Capitol Educational Support (CES), a non-profit organization whose mission is to change and empower communities one child at a time. As former Director of Out of School Time Programs, he was responsible for the day to day operations of several youth service programs in addition to grant writing and administrative responsibilities. After his time with CES Carl was appointed to the position of Ward 5 Community Liaison for Mayor Vincent C. Gray. In that post Carl was primarily responsible for the maintenance of service deliverables provided by the Government of the District of Columbia, and the accuracy of problem solving mechanisms in place to address specific issues as they arose. In September of 2012 Carl was promoted to his present position as Director of the Mayor’s Office of the Clean City Initiative. Under his purview, the office maintains a rigorous rating system of the performance of the DC Department of Public Works. The OCC also administers the Adopt-A-Block program, fostering the cleanliness of our city streets at a grassroots level. Carl is married to his high school sweetheart, Maryam. Together they live in Ward 5 with their three daughters Imani, Iesha and Aya; ages 9, 8, and 3 respectively. Like themselves, he and Maryam are raising a civically active and community engaged family of activists and leaders.
