https://youtube/watch?v=9RExQFZzHXQ&t=62m47s I can appreciate the point that Neil deGrasse Tyson is making here, and Im willing to agree that little material contribution has been made by contemporary philosophers (strictly) in the realm of physical science. However, I would have to argue that the philosophy of science is a necessary foundation for all scientists, so that the nature of scientific knowledge and the scientific method is understood best by those who actively participate in the discipline. And this is with regard to philosophys role in science--outside of science, philosophy has much to offer anybody who approaches it with an open and rigorous mind. I think that the armchair philosopher who dogmatically spouts only their own philosophies have tainted the name of philosophy, but studying the ideas of the great intellectuals of the past--even if you dont subscribe to their notions of reality or truth--allow you to consider a myriad of perspectives and paradigms that can really expand your intellectual horizons.
