https://youtube/watch?v=AIFiPQAAPt8 Russell makes the point that the Islamic State situation is a result of the previous economic and military actions and policies of the US and the UK in Iraq. Its a fact that our governments lied to us about Saddam having WMDs that posed a genuine threat to the UK. The UK government also ignored the largest political demonstration in UK history and supported an illegal invasion of a sovereign state that caused inumerable deaths and destroyed the infrastructure of a country with the highest literacy levels in the Middle East. Saddam was a bastard, but the country was stable. Islamic State are obviously ruthless, but we have to question how becoming once again embroiled in a never-ending conflict will reolve these issues. Its not enough to go kill the bad guys. This is about securing oil from militants, the economic value of using high tech weaponry to a small number of corporate elite in the States and also maintaining a military presence in Iraq. Any humanitarian reason given is a smoke screen and dont forget that all the newspapers and the BBC ran the stories of WMDs in Iraq in 2002. Dont believe the hype. We need a massive reform of the United Nations Security Council, by adding some of the biggest economies such as India, Japan, Nigeria and Brazil, the UN might be a stronger force to sort out genuine humanitarian problems. I agree with Russell that humanitarian issues should not be tackled by those who stand to gain from it financially or strategically.
