East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh), was a provincial state of Pakistan that existed in the Bengal region. East Pakistan was one of the largest provincial states of Pakistan, with the largest population. The East Wing of Pakistan, separated from the West Wing by 1,600 kilometres of Indian territory. On 26 March 1971, when the Pakistani Army launched a military operation against Bengali civilians, who were demanding that the Pakistani military junta accept the results of the 1970 first democratic elections of Pakistan, which were won by an eastern party, or to allow separation between East and West Pakistan. Bengali politicians announced the declaration of Bangladeshs independence. India entered the war on 3 December 1971. Within two weeks of intense fighting, Pakistani forces in East Pakistan surrendered to the joint command of Indian and Bangladeshi forces following which the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh was created.
