https://youtube/watch?v=Kwif2fTJkmg Actress and newly assigned UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson just did a speech in front of the UN council to promote HeforShe, a movement that aims to invite men and boys to get involved in fighting for Gender Equality. This got me thinking, who do I think are feminists characters in Hey Arnold? Some might say Helga, but I say shes only close to be one. I didnt consider Arnold for a long while because he always thinks girls should be dainty (Biosquare) and he was one of the guys who didnt want Helga to come with them to the cemetery and catch a glimpse of the ghost bride because they think girls get scared easily (Ghost Bride). But lets not forget that the main characters are 9 year olds after all and they dont know any better. However, I remembered the episode Harold vs Patty and watched it again and discovered its heavy on the subject of feminism. I loved it! Arnold is the first to show his feminist side by telling Harold thats theres nothing to be embarrassed in losing to a girl (Patty) in arm-wrestling. Patty is also a feminist because she believes that girls can succeed in typical boy activities (like arm-wrestling). She also believes that boys shouldnt be embarrassed when girls excel more than they do. That a boy SHOULD be embarrassed if he acts like a jerk for his mindset that boys are better than girls. Eventually, Harold converts to become a feminist at the end of the episode. He realizes that what Patty said was true and he was no longer ashamed when Patty finally beat him in the citywide arm-wrestling competition. In this episode, there is a girls side and a boys side in feminism. Girls should work hard to prove that they can be equal with boys. With boys, they need to learn to be comfortable with their sensitivities and limitations because its hard to be forced by society to be always strong, tough and not show emotion (as what Harold felt). Watch Harold vs Patty with your younger siblings so that their generation will be better than ours in terms of gender equality.
