https://youtube/watch?v=XiGwAvd5mvM Thoughts of Citizenfour: So this movie does require some background for those who have no idea what it is. Around January of 2013, filmmaker Laura Poitras and Glenn Greenwald whos a journalist for The Guardian were receiving encrypted emails by someone under the codename Citizenfour. This person gave these two inside information about how the NSA and other agencies were conducting huge surveillance programs on millions of people. Then in June of that year, Poitras and Greenwald flew to Hong Kong to meet this person who turned out to be Edward Snowden. Through these meetings, Snowden discusses about putting this information out to the public which then results in the first articles and then the initial reveal of himself. The events before, during, and after these meetings are filmed by Poitras is this amazing documentary that acts as a character study of Snowden yet more importantly, an observation on how privacy as well as freedom has become lost. This movie is both a chilling look at important events in history taking place as well as a thriller that is interesting to watch. Snowden is really interesting to watch. The film wisely lets us observe him and come to our own conclusions. I found Snowden to be an intelligent, sane, nice, brave, and maybe awkward person. It shows how he knows the risks hes taking and understands what might happens. I love how Poitras has alot of these moments of pure silence where we observe these people and think to ourselves who they are. Whats even more important through is that Citizenfour is a scary film that displays the honest reality of how we can no longer be free in this digital age when the government can hear phone calls, read your emails, and know what websites you go to. Weve known this for a long time but its probably only been until this point that we fully realize the scope of all this. Through subtle uses of camera and human interaction, Citizenfour is a fantastic documentary that I feel is both frightening, interesting, and important.
