https://youtube/watch?v=ZGZX5-PAwR8 Alright, I got two back to back links for you, because this one I forgot to post up yesterday, so Ill get this one up quickly, before we go on to the next film for today. Anyway, if youre going to do a music week, than why not have a musical film for this week. This was our film for yesterday, and that would be The Little Mermaid. The first film released in the Renaissance era, and its the best one made, but well get to my thoughts on it in a just bit. First, contrary to popular belief, even though it really was the first one released in the Renaissance era, it actually wasnt the first one in the Second Golden Age of Animation. That actually started with Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Oliver & Company the year before this film because of how successful they were. Although, if you want to get technical, than it actually started in 1986 with An American Tale by Don Bluth. However, with all that said, its one of my favorites, and a great film. Its #12 on my list of favorite films. It was a return to form for Disney here because before this time and after Walts death, it was a difficult time, because while some of their films were still successful, they never reached the success rate Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs achieved, and after the disappointment of The Black Cauldron, Disney got off on the urge that they were going to turn out better projects, and they also turned them out fast, because now the new films were coming out every year, instead of seven to ten years, and this was the film that started that long term off. This was the return to the great animation, the fairy tale story, and the great animation too, and it shows too. The storys great, a throw back to the fairy tale films made before, the animation is top notch, the characters are great, the villains one of the best, and the songs are awesome seeing as how this was the first film Alan Menken ever did. I also love the film because its identical to my absolute favorite Pinocchio in a little way with someone wanting to be human and overcoming obstacles, except this one maybe more viewer friendlier to audiences though. Theres some debate on whether the main character is good or not. I enjoy her, although I know she can be a teenaged drama queen, once in awhile. But still, she did things that female characters in the past could never do. She wasnt a damsel waiting to be rescued, she actually left the house, broke the rules, and did her own thing. On top of that, saved the prince twice in the film. So, thats why I like her, despite some scenes where she whines, and the fact that she inadvertently started all the trouble set in the climax of the film. Speaking of the climax, that scene was great. Thats why I consider this film to be the third most climatic scene made after both Peter Pan and Fun and Fancy Free. Another good point in this film is that the romance was actually developed. Even though it wasnt very long, the couple still did have to take their time to fall in love and build a romance, which is still another advantage over the past fairy tale princess films, as much as we hate to admit it. I think the only thing I really dislike in this film is Flounder, who I thought was just shoehorned into the film to keep little kids from being bored. All in all though, I really love this one. Its one the best classics made, and while some of the films made after it were still good in their own way, none of them can ever surpass this film, because this was the beginning point for Disney in the late 80s/early 90s, and the future films of the 90s and even now would all spawn from this. So, its a definite classic and mainstream for Disney. Its one of my favorites, and seeing as how it was the first one during the Renaissance era 25 years ago, it would be the first Monster Hit Disney made during that time, with plenty more to come in the future. Alright, Ill be right back with the real film for today in just a moment.
