https://youtube/watch?v=ZGmpFrPSOEA Former Munster and Ireland star David Wallace and Dublin ladies football captain Sinead Goldrick are accustomed to difficult conditions but this is ridiculous. The pair braved the sub-zero temperatures at the Forty Foot in Sandycove, Dublin to take on the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Ireland. The Polar Plunge is one of Special Olympics Irelands most novel annual events and it is hoped that thousands will be inspired by the exploits of Mr Wallace and Ms Goldrick. “This is a great way to raise funds for some of Ireland’s most inspiring athletes,’ said Wallace, who is an ambassador and board member with the charity that support athletes with intellectual disabilities. “Special Olympics is all about creating a better world through inclusion and acceptance. But to achieve this it needs funds to support the thousands of athletes availing of its services. I can’t say you won’t get cold, but the polar plunge at the Forty Foot this December is a unique and fun way to raise money and I would urge as many people as possible to sign-up at specialolympics.ie/polarplunge.” Goldrick (25), who led the Dublin ladies tantalisingly close to All-Ireland glory against Cork earlier this year, said plunging at the Forty Foot is something everyone should do at least once in their life. ‘It’s one of those things that people want to say they have done at least once and if you can help raise money for a really great cause like Special Olympics then all the better.” Organisers of the Forty Foot event are calling on volunteers to leap into the sea on Saturday December 6. Separate plunges will also take place in locations around the country in December as part of a fundraising drive to raise funds for athletes with intellectual disabilities. The Forty Foot event is being spearheaded by retired Assistant Commissioner Michael Feehan and the local Gardaí from Dun Laoghaire. Gardaí said they are hoping to attract in excess of 300 plungers on the day with the first plungers due to take their icy leap of faith at 11am. “All of the money raised will go towards supporting athletes in the eastern region and ensuring that they continue to get access to sporting opportunities through competitions, leagues and interclub competitions,’ said Mr Feehan. ‘On top of that it promises to be good fun so sign-up today!” Registration costs €15 and plungers are asked to raise a minimum €50 which goes directly to supporting athletes with intellectual disabilities through sport and competition. Plungers who raise more than €50 will also receive a complimentary ‘Ice Cool’ t-shirt. Here is when and where events are taking place across the country: Friday December 5 - 10am start-time: Belfast International Airport – Saturday December 6 – 11am start-time: Clogherhead, Co Louth – registration €15 Saturday December 6 - 11am start time: Forty Foot, Sandycove, Co Dublin – registration €15 Sunday December 7 – 12 noon start-time: UL Activity Centre, Killaloe, Co Clare – registration €15 Saturday December 13 – The Strand, Athlone, Co Westmeath
