After listening to it, what I am left with is the sense that very little has changed in America in the past 30 years. Both in terms of the problems we face and the polarization between the different strategies for facing those problems. As you might guess from the scare quotes above, I dont find Cuomos ideas very convincing. If anything, this speech makes me even more skeptical about progressive solutions than I was before. Since Cuomos speech, weve had 30 years of an ever increasing welfare state, and nothing is fixed yet. No matter how large the states burden becomes, the liberals response is always the same: More, more, more. It seems progressives really have no end point short of absolute socialism.
