https://youtube/watch?v=ktPwAP5Y4as In 1982, I was accepted onto the Expressive Arts course in Brighton. Then, a few weeks before I was due to leave home, I remember sitting at home in Great Harwood, watching an episode of BBC2s youth programme Something Else. It was shot in Brighton and prominently featured students from the Expressive Arts course. The whole episode was strange and slightly unsettling. Very different from Something Elses usual issue based fare. It contained several odd comic sketches and a couple of off kilter songs by the band Birds With Ears - fronted by the great and now tragically late Ian Smith. I was already a big fan of left field music, but this seemed very odd indeed. What was this bizarre Doctor Seuss electro-pop? And who on earth was this surreal lead singer who came on like some sinister psychedelic Child Catcher? If I remember correctly, the show climaxed with this version of Prancing. By the end of this, I was simply counting down the days til I could leave home and get down to Brighton, to where the real weird was. And Brighton - and Ian in particular - did not disappoint.
