ilgiardino/about.html Tony Gargiulo was a good friend to me. He was a sophisticated, urbane--quite the charming and dapper man. I will miss him immensely. I recently spoke with him and we kibitzed about the food service industry and how he was doing. He told me that he was in great shape and doing quite well. What a sorrowful afternoon yesterday became when I heard he had passed away. Upon opening Il Giardino in Virginia Beach, his chef very dramatically quit, leaving him stranded. Tony called me at Suddenly Last Summer to ask if I could help. I opened Il Giardino with him. I did not feel savvy enough with Italian cuisine to create an all Italian menu, but I did offer a few of my pasta dishes, and decided to use the menu created by the chef who was to open the restaurant. I worked with Tony for about a week until he acquired his Italian chef. The last I saw Tony was at the Smithfield Inn in 2012 where he dined, bringing his own recorded Italian music. He placed his i-Pod on the table and dinner commenced. He and his lady friend dined into late night, and I made sure that he was graciously accommodated as if it were his own restaurant. I will miss Tony “G”, and I will never forget him as I hope to see him again somewhere, somehow. I will always love and respect this man. Ciao Tony.
