interesting conversation with a drummer recently. i mentioned that i was working on programming drums for a new piece. this guy says, i can always tell when someone who isnt a drummer programs drums because they program stuff that a real drummer cant play. so it doesnt sound like a real drummer. hahaha. hello? thats the whole point. when im programming drums and other music parts on a computer, why would i limit myself to only what a human can play? the computer creates unlimited possibilities. why not use them? computers are just another way of creating music. they are neutral. its humans who make the music. depending on their ability and creativity, the music will be great, good, mediocre or shitty. the medium is almost irrelevant. AND hes also wrong. it is very possible to program a computer to make drums sound human. most DAWs now use a grid to lock rhythms. BUT... you can turn off the grid and move every single riff, pattern and hit slightly forward, behind or straight up and down on the beat to make the music sound more fluid. working with computers is like anything else, if you take the time to learn and do the work, take care of the details, you can do incredible things. and like anything else, you have to care enough to actually do that.
