interesting study of where technique for the sake of technique might lead. often, the underlying structure is actually weakened by it, note the Revolutionary Etude and how the theme doesnt arrive to the expected fullness of cry any of the times it is repeated. the etude in thirds becomes clearer as a minx, linking it closer to feux follets than to the exercise fetish it clearly evokes in a weightier delivery. the black key etude benefits by the tighter form, the strange emphasis on beacon notes of Friedmans choosing in this etude and in the butterfly not withstanding, and the descending glissando handiwork is innovative. there is considerable alteration of meter across this repertoire to conform to his willful imagining that shows very clearly why a more serious trend that we follow and perpetuate today has for some time placed Friedman in the shadows.
