is going to have to contend with the frightening reality of multiple surgeries to be rid of his kidney stone. The specialist seems to think these things can only get to such a size after more than ten years of unchecked progress, which makes me wonder why my doctor in New Zealand didnt pick it up six years ago. Having the specialist tell me about the invasive procedure and the use of a laser inside my kidney didnt really rattle me, but the idea of being given a general anaesthetic, and thereby not being in control of the process of losing my own consciousness, is absolutely mortifying. This obviously isnt a life-threatening thing, and I am completely cognisant of the fact that I will be in the best of care as I go through it. But nevertheless I confess to feeling scared, and I have a lot of thinking and soul-searching to do over the weekend.
