it is a mistake to suppose, as is commonly done, that to need - TopicsExpress

it is a mistake to suppose, as is commonly done, that to need something is to lack It. If to need something were to lack it, then to complain You are never here when I need you would be to rail against a logical necessity. Surely, I could properly feel insulted if you were to conclude from my remark that on such-and-such an occasion I needed all my wits about me that, therefore, I was on that occasion somewhat witless (White, _Modal Thinking_ 107-8). This is a delightful snippet of the so-called ordinary language conceptual analysis. Its a kind of shame that this kind of thinking can no longer (not straightforwardly anyway) pass as good analytical philosophy.
