it stresses that in thought and deed in every sphere of life the self has to be subordinated to a higher end, a nobler purpose. This ideal (nishkam karma) was put in the scroll in its English translation as Service Before Self. In the fifties it was decided to do away with an English motto and have a corresponding Sanskrit one instead, more in keeping with Indian culture. So Service Before Self was translated as Seva Parmo Dharm, perhaps because it was felt that three words must remain three in translation too, or because it was forgotten that the English motto itself was a translation of the original Sanskrit motto. But this has happened throughout the world when things were translated from Greek or Latin or German into English and back into the original language.
