its so easy to dump on all cops right now, because of the bad ones or the ones not suited to the profession, the ones too full of fear to make correct and split-second decisions continually required in this profession....but I encourage anyone reading this to reflect on all the good police do, as well as times you may have directly or indirectly benefited from the committed, brave, and well-trained police. I can think of many instances in my own life, but one Ill never forget is the squad who burst into our battery park city buildings lobby on a certain september day in 2001, towering over us like transformers in their apocalyptic protective gear, covered in the billion pounds of dust, coming to our rescue as we huddled in the eternity of unknown and terrifying moments following the collapse(s); they, firmly, forcefully ordering hundreds of us to the police boats waiting at harbors edge...I stepped onto the gunwale of one boat in sheer terror, clutching 18 month-old dotter, and, glancing up from my tentative footing, was met by the extended arms of cop; communicating with his unwavering and piercing eyes the need for me to trust him and hand my baby dotter over to him as the boat rocked and heaved.....the image of a fumble jolted my mind, the image of her plunging into the brown, choppy waters of the hudson, but the cop made good, he knew he would make good, and so handed her over and scrambled down that narrow strip of gunwale behind him, to the safety of the deck; my husband followed and we huddled in the arms of a dusty police blanket until the boat was full...they crossed the hudson and deposited us in jersey, and then went back for more. dotter would say today that we were rescued only bc we were white and rich, but thats not how it was that day. please watch this incredible tribute concert (most notably, to me, david bowies jaw-dropping show opener, the whos blistering set, and CHRIST; billy joel!!! tears and shivers!!). please dont let the deliberate or mistaken or justified actions of one (or more) cop(s) distort your view of the good we do. so now, watch, and be prepared to be very moved. https://youtube/watch?v=IS4ZW6f89QI&list=PL992177BD21655962&index=6
