Liberalism falls on false dichotomies of this sort because it is a form of metaphysical manic-depression. You either have to feel absolutely brazenly wonderful about what you are, or you must hate yourself. This bipolar disorder also applies to liberal morality: anyone who doesnt agree that everyones really just a Good Person inside (apart from racists and rightwingers of various stripes) is liable to be considered a guilt-stricken prude whos probably suffering from some Freudian complex or other.
