Job Description UNIT ASSISTANT Job Number: 3006-2FM-2014 Description UNIT ASSISTANT BID/JOB ANNOUNCEMENT DEPARTMENT: FLEET AND FACILITY MANAGEMENT These positions are open to the general public and to all current city employees covered under the terms of the Citys collective bargaining agreement with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) - BARGAINING UNIT 1,3,4,5). VACANCIES: 2 ESSENTIAL DUTIES: •Picks-up, sorts and delivers items (e.g., mail, packages, supplies, equipment, payroll checks, reproduction jobs) to various locations and sites throughout the City •Drives vehicles (e.g., sedan, van, sport utility vehicle, pickup truck) to transport City officials and departmental personnel to and from meetings, appointments, and job sites •Loads and unloads items (e.g., mail, reproduction jobs and supplies) into and out of vehicle •Inspects interior and exterior of vehicle for proper working condition to ensure safe operation/driving of vehicle and fills fuel tank •Follows safety regulations and state laws governing vehicle operation and ensures that passengers follow safety regulations •Responsible for pick up and drop off of vehicle at designated City garage or parking lot •Drives vehicle for scheduled maintenance and repair service to assigned locations •Maintains the cleanliness and security of vehicles •Prepares daily and monthly vehicle log sheets •May assist with various clerical activities such as answering the telephone, stocking inventory, filing and photocopying NOTE: The list of essential duties is not intended to be inclusive; there may be other duties that are essential to particular positions within the class. LOCATION: Citywide HOURS: Varies THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE Qualifications •Six months of work experience as an automobile messenger •A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required NOTE: Your must provide your valid U.S. drivers license at time of processing. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS •Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds WORKING CONDITIONS •Exposure to inclement weather and extreme temperatures SELECTION REQUIREMENTS This position does not require a test or interview. Applicants who successfully apply for the position, meet the minimum qualifications, and possess the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be hired in seniority/lottery order. Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following: •Previous experience with Pitney Bowes postage machine •Proficiency operating a computer NOTE: To be considered for this position you must provide information about your educational background and your work experience. In order to receive the veterans preference, candidates need to indicate whether or not they are a veteran by answering “yes” or “no” to the question on the online application that asks, “Are you currently serving on active duty for at least six months in the Armed Forces of the United States OR have you served in the Armed Forces of the United States on active duty for at least six months and received an honorable or general discharge?” In addition, you must attach documentation to verify your military service. For veterans, you must attach a copy of your DD214 (Member Copy-4) to your online application which includes character of service status OR a letter from the United States Veterans Administration on official stationary stating dates of service and character of service. For active military personnel, you must attach a letter from your Commanding Officer on official stationary verifying your active duty, length of service, and character of service in the Armed Forces of the United States AND a copy of your military ID to your online application. Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference. Evaluation: Your initial evaluation will be based on information provided on the application form and documents submitted with the application.
