just posted this comment on fin24: First port of call. Who bank rolled AMCU and set out their mandate or constitution? It takes a lot of finances, knowledge capital and resources to start a Union. How and when did AMCU materialise? There is a conspiracy theory that a big Mining house thought that NUMSA was too strong and bank rolled a senior union steward to start AMCU? Answer this question and we can start digging out of this excretement. The unions will have no members to fight for when mines start retrenching workers. No body complained when the mines started prospecting, laid out capital for infrastructure and created jobs? Now why is there an issue? The Unions now hold all the cards because this started many moons ago in 1993 with lots of promises. The goverment is now stuck between a rock and a hard place (excuse the pun) because most of the physical mine workers are illiterate and have bare/basic skills. The mines pay tax and create jobs and are the foundation of the National GDP. If the mines fold, investment in RSA slows or stops; unemployment grows etc. The Goverment created this monster when they aligned with the Unions for votes. The Goverment broke it, they must now either put the Economy first or the Unions first? There are going to be a few broken egos. Read the full article:
