just posted this comment on news24: One idea I have seen is that the aircraft experienced a fire on board. This would mean certain actions would be done such as pulling the busses [electrical circuit switches] to isolate the fire and power off systems affected. The busses also control transponders and auto communicators. The pilot would look at the nearest usable airfield and head for that immediately. If the on board cabin oxygen systems failed or were compromised, they would descend to breathable air levels. While determining a fire or decompression scenario, the pilots could have set the autopilot on the emergency heading and dealt with the critical issues. The pilots dont have much oxygen available but the passengers have even less. [our own Helderberg disaster pointed to a fire and the pilot was not permitted to head for a suitable airfield but continued until power was lost and the plane crashed into the sea - they may have been overcome with smoke already on autopilot]. It is possible that the aircraft was at low altitude and headed over land and back out to sea until the fuel ran out or the fire caused the plane to fail in mid flight. Debris at sea can be anything especially sea containers lost on storms and other debris. It is sad to lose so many lives and I only hope we can piece together what happened to learn from this incident in a positive way for the future. Who knows which theory is correct until more facts come to light? Read the full article:
