#kahuna. #lāʻau. #mana. Many a discussion about the kahuna (specialist, expert, priest, doctor) of old Hawaiʻi can be found in the Hawaiian language newspapers. One of the first mentions of kahuna in the nūpepa was plublished in, Kumu Hawaii, on February 27, 1839 about kahuna hoʻopunipuni. At that time the kahuna was a liar (ho`opunipuni). Under the list of liar were the medical kahunas, dispensers of love potions (kahuna hana aloha), sorcerers (kahuna `ana`ana) and mediums (kahuna ho`onoho- noho). He remained a liar until 1868 when during the reign of Kamehameha V, the king advocated for the removal of the stigma placed on kahuna that classified them as liars. In the Ku`oko`a newspaper of February 27, 1869, an article describes a law that was passed by the Legislature of 1868, establishing a Board of Health. Anyone who wanted a license to practice medicine applied to the Board of Health. The King appointed two Hawaiians and one Haole to consider each application. In Ke Au `Okoʻa of March 3, 1870, mention was made of the forming of a Society of Medical Kahunas, an old time Medical Association. The licensed kahuna was required to make an annual report. Mrs. Mary Kawena Pukui writes how Miss Livermore found some of these annual reports at the State Archives and copied them. They gave the names of the patients, their ailments and the prescription used for each. Posted here (clockwise from the upper left), is a letter dated January 25, 1875, to Mr. Kauakaokai of Pukoo, Molokai, acknowledging that his application submitted to the Board of Health was approved and he can legally practice medicine. Also shown is the cover of his medical book and some on his medical entries, which were part of his annual report found at the Hawaiʻi State Archives.
