kj... Rebecca shared... Hi. I just want to share a story. My 5 yr old had a fever of 105.1 on Sunday this week. We took him to the ER. He was diagnosed with viral pneumonia. He tested neg for flu and strep. Monday he improved but overnight he developed bilateral calf muscle pain and was unable to bear weight or walk. We returned to ER and was diagnosed with Acute Viral Myositis with rhabdomyolysis and was hospitalized. With further blood tests it was also determined that the virus had wiped out his bone marrow function and he had a dangerously low white blood cell count and neutropenia requiring protective isolation and consult to pediatric hem-oncologist. A second flu test was negative. They sent out viral DNA testing to isolate the virus but the pediatrician still stands firm she believes it is influenza. He tested negative for mono and CMV as well. His CPK was >12,000 from the muscle break down. He remained on IV fluids to flush his kidneys and prevent kidney failure. I cant help to think that if this is flu and I had vaccinated him, hed be dead. I am hoping they are able to isolate the virus from the PCR test, but itll take 5-7 days. Hes doing better, but white blood cell count still low, but neutrophils improved to let us get out of isolation. They gave him no meds except IV fluids in which I am grateful. I wonder if the flu vaccine would have caused an immune response that would have killed him and I am so grateful he wasnt vaccinated. Thank you for listening anyway. Hes doing better. Recheck WBCs in 2 weeks as long as no temp between now and then. They said it could also be leukemia, but is looking less so because of the neutrophil regeneration that has already started.
