last year about this time I began to self experiment/teach and accept some gentle mentorship re: DIY lighting. I actually devoted an album to that bit of learning here: https://facebook/karen.hanrahan/media_set?set=a.10202972237446843.1073741834.1231162241&type=3 AND I did a ton of practicing during my residencies. But after that I let the on the drier set up go because it was really driving me crazy in my kitchen. My general feeling is the natural light is best. Dont always have that when I am making dinner. Casually I have been snapping a shot here or there as I make dinner and amusing myself because while taking food photography when making dinner seems like a good idea - i find myself very impatient w/ the process ( uh, cuz i am making dinner not doing a food photography shoot ) and I am usually starved!! ( more amusement! This happened at my residencies also - like drooling hungry) Add one other fact, my kitchen isnt always in picture perfect mode. AND the lighting isnt very good. However I still want to learn. and play!! The other day I thought Id experiment and apply a bit of patience - and see what this little lamp of light and corner of counter space could provide. My general feeling is that some of these are too yellow - but I really like the cauliflower and garlic shots. I wonder how real food photographers/bloggers do it? Shepards Pie - topped with a cauliflower, sweet potato, potato mash.
