levifishingflies/ Consider a reel with a drag system. A drag system employs a brake to press against the reel spool to slow its rate of spin when line is pulled off it, either by a fish on the line or when stripping line off the reel when preparing to cast. Most fly reels use a click-and-pawl system, which is really no drag system. With this type of reel, the angler applies finger pressure to the spool to slow its rate of spin. Other reels have drag systems that can be adjusted with the turn of a knob. With these systems, it’s best to “set and forget” the drag, tightened just enough that the reel doesn’t overrun when stripping line to cast. xamine the reel’s finish. Specifically, if you plan to fly-fish for saltwater species, you’ll want a reel that has been powder-coated or otherwise treated to resist corrosion. Ideally, the reel should be advertised as “saltwater-proof.” Even with treatments to resist corrosion, it’s still a good idea to soak, rinse, and lubricate fly reels used for saltwater species. Over time, dents, dings, and chipped paint allow salty water to get to the parts of the reel most vulnerable to corroding.
