livingwaters This may be a naive suggestion (and I may be missing something here) but these people have known that the lava was coming, for months. There has to be a contractor on the island with trucks, cranes and diggers (obviously someone built their homes). Why doesnt someone suggest that the town work together with the contractors and dig a massive hole into which the lava could flow (the lead finger only 20 yards wide)? A little dynamite would also help. That would buy time to dig a channel for it to flow to the sea. Their land and their homes are worth the effort and expense. I would also appoint a spokesperson to say on the national TV networks (they are there every day), “Come and help us! We have a thousand residents here already and we are all digging in. Help us save our town! We will put you up in our homes and feed you free pineapple pizza.” The National Guard who drive around on patrols as an extra set of eyes may even help dig. Maybe not.
