m.espn.go/nba/story?storyId=12114523 This is a great article and an important thing to keep in mind with our kids. The big idea is that just playing more basketball games doesnt make us better basketball players. To become a better basketball player we have to be continually refining our craft. In the classroom we dont just give tests everyday. We work on skills for a week or two before we take the test. This allows us to do better on the test. If we tested everyday we wouldnt see improvement. As parents/players/coaches if were always looking for that next tournament or next league what are we doing in between to get them ready? After playing in all those tourneys and leagues are the kids still hungry to go out and get better? If they (and us) think thats enough then are they really getting better? I know just this week I had an eye opener in working with Kobe. We were working on post moves and I told him to try something and he asked Can I do that? It seemed to me to be something completely obvious but then I realized that I as a dad havent put in the time with my own son that I should have because Ive been too busy being coach. There always needs to be time to improve and just playing games sometimes limits that time for improvement.
