maths@work many guys are somewhat scared of this formidable subject. But the fact is that as we engage with several mathematical concepts every day of our working lives. 1.Addition-1 of the simplest ideas in maths is the addition of 2 or more numbers to produce a sum or total.we r familiar with this concept. Evry day, generally witness the constant addition of work to thr pending tasks,& the cumulative number of unfinished tasks thus keeps expanding, like a grand total on the move.The senior adds jobs to be completed,other teams add to such additions by providing tasks of thr own.Many emails contribute to this constant addition of jobs, 2.Subtraction-Smart guys respond to this barrage of addition by applying the idea of subtraction,yet another mathl device. They subtract the number of things theyve to do by delegating some jobs to others, by immediately deleting tasks which they consider unnecessary,& by shelving matters which r not important or urgent. If u see an executive with a clean table,u know tht hes a master of subtraction. 3.Multiplication- as per the Corporate Theory of Multiplication quickly.tht the number of problems/issues tht any orgnizationll face will multiply with the passing of every single day.A corollary to this theory is tht guys shud only focus on taking the right actions to address these multiple problems, without getting unduly anxious abt thm.Any other approach can lead to multiplication of health&wellness issues, 3.Drawing lines- Lines r @ the heart of the visual branch of maths known as geometry.These r also at the heart of evry corporate enterprise.Here, the lines which clearly matter r the top line (the revenue u generate) and the bottom line (the profits u earn).Both these lines dominate executives’ lives,& eventually end up taking a toll on thr hairlines and waistlines. 4. Equations Mathematics—in algebra,is all about equations,with each equation trying to solve 4 unknown variables generally denoted as X, Y & Z.people too know tht workspaces & careers r all about equations with multiple people such as colleagues, superiors, team members, vendors etc. In fact, many of these same people r the unknown variables a team member tries to solve for. Also,coz a good number of such people keep changing their views and motivations unpredictably,quite often corporate equations become far more challenging to resolve thn the regular ones which involve X and Y. Smart guys must become adept at equations. 5.String theory-Theres an interesting branch of maths called string theory, whr physical particles r replaced by 1-di objects called strings. In our offices, though, string theory takes a different shape. It essentially consists of various people or depmts who try to string u along by putting forward false promises/assurances,often for ther own selfish ends. It;s impt tht guys quickly figure out the manipulators of such strings,by learning to distinguish the true frm the false.Once u master string theory, no 1 can take u for a ride. 6.Law of tangents-The law of tangents is an essential principle in mathematics, which draws a direct relationship between the tangential angles of a triangle & the length of its sides.guys encounter an interesting version of this law, which establishes a similarly clear relationship between the tangential nature of any official discussion & its length.This states tht if ur senior or colleague is talking at a tangent on any subject (which we know happens quite often),then the length of the meeting is likely2 b unduly extended, and no productive result will evr b achieved.guys can solve this knotty problem by finding the simplest excuse (an important client call that cant b postponed prhps) to leave such meetings. 7.Regression analysis- it tries 2 establish a firm relationship or trend between diverse variables/numbers.The same concept applies to organizations and guys, as they try to understand why sales or quality or profits have regressed steadily ovr the past several months and years. Could the reason for such regression b the heavy rainfall in the factory, or people in south India brushing their teeth less often,or the slowing economy perhaps? Many guys r experts at such regression analysis,& the causes they identify r most often totally outside thr control. Such expertise unfortunately also leads to the regression of careers,coz good mgmt theory believes tht guys should firmly take charge & deliver. 8.Laws of probability-Probability is yet another impt branch of mathematics,& 1 thts constantly applied in all offices.For instance, if ur senior has a firm point of view which is opposed to urs,the probability tht his viewll eventually prevail is close to 100%. If u are launching a product/mktg campaign nxt week, the probability tht everything is under control as of today is close to 0(zero). mathematicians, soon realize tht some probabilities can be altered but not all. That’s life.
